Petersburg School Board Announces New Superintendent

Petersburg, VA—Petersburg City School Board has hired Dr. Joseph C. Melvin as the new superintendent of Petersburg City Schools, effective January 2, 2013.

Dr. Melvin is a native of Norfolk, and received a Bachelor of Science from Norfolk State University. He earned a Masters of Business

Administration degree from Hampton University, and his doctoral degree from Virginia Tech, with a major in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.

Melvin has served as Superintendent of Essex County Public Schools since 2010. He has also worked in school systems in Buffalo, New York, Hampton and Norfolk.

School Board Chair Kenneth Pritchett said the following of the Board's decision to hire Melvin: “We are very pleased with the selection of Dr. Joseph Melvin. Throughout the selection process, Dr. Melvin has received the unanimous support of the board. He has served

many roles in education during his career from being a principal at the elementary and middle school levels, and as a central office administrator focused on curriculum and instruction.”

Dr. Melvin will begin in his new position on January 2, 2013.
