Release from Virginia State Police:
Shortly after 3:30 a.m. this morning, Virginia State Police responded to the scene of a tractor-trailer crash on the exit ramp from Interstate 95 southbound to Interstate 295 northbound in Henrico County. This is exit 84 B.
The crash occurred when the driver of a 2007 Freightliner Tractor-Trailer, who was exiting onto the ramp from Interstate 95 southbound to Interstate 295 northbound, lost control of his vehicle and ran off the left side of the roadway on the access ramp. The tractor-trailer overturned striking approximately 40 yards of guardrail before coming to rest onto its roof.
The driver, Mike L. Hylton Jr., 31, of Osgood, Indiana, was entrapped inside the tractor for approximately 90 minutes. Hylton, who was wearing his safety belt, was transported to VCU Medical Center by ambulance with serious non-life threatening injuries.
Hylton was traveling from Toano, Va. to Hedron, Ky., at the time of the crash. The trailer was fully loaded with empty liquor bottles. Some of the bottles were spilled out of the trailer. The remainder of the bottles will be offloaded by hand and then the tractor-trailer will be up righted. Clean-up is expected to last into the afternoon.
Speed is considered a factor in the crash. Hylton was charged with reckless driving.
