Lucille Brown Student Wins City Spelling Bee

Ian Fraser, a seventh-grader at Lucille Brown Middle School, is the 2011 Richmond Public Schools Spelling Bee champion.  Fraser captured the title at the district-wide competition held last month at Mary Munford Elementary School.

This year's title marks the second time that Fraser has captured the district's spelling bee.  He also placed first in 2009.

More than 800 students competed for the title, with 36 advancing to the final rounds of competition held at Munford.  Fraser, 13, correctly spelled the word “omnipotent” to win this year's bee.

Fraser will now compete at the Central Regional Spelling Bee scheduled for March 5 at 1 p.m. at the Library of Virginia.

Rianne Alter, an eighth-grader at Henderson Middle School, placed second at this year's event.
