Richmond Looks To Clamp Down On Nightclubs

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Richmond officials are looking to clamp down on problem nightclubs following two fatal shootings.

City Council on Monday proposed an ordinance that would require nightclubs to obtain a $100 permit that could be revoked if the business is deemed a public nuisance. The permits would be renewed annually.

It would establish requirements for security, require club owners and event promoters to pass criminal background checks and replace existing regulations that some officials say are unenforceable.

Two people have been shot to death in the city's Shockoe Bottom entertainment district in the past two months.

Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones says officials want to ensure safety at the venues while keeping the entertainment district thriving.
