Richmond Police are investigating the shooting death of a 5-year-old girl in Church Hill late Tuesday night.
According to authorities, a 10-year-old boy found his mother's gun and shot the girl, who is his niece, in the head. The victim, Dominique Carter, was transported to the hospital, where she died Wednesday afternoon. Police believe the shooting to be accidental.
A two-year-old girl was present at the time of the shooting in the 2400 block of M Street, but was not injured.
The mother, 41-year-old Judy Wright, is facing felony child neglect charges in connection with this case. Police said Wright was at work at the time of the shooting.
The yet unidentified ten and two year old children are in the custody of child protective services.
According to a news release, more charges could be filed against Wright, pending a review of the case by Richmond Police and the Commonwealth's Attorney.
