They are larger than the normal ants that you see. Carpenter ants eat wood but don't get any nourishment from the wood. They eat it and then spit it back out, so you may find sawdust collecting under an area where an infestation is taking place. It's usually in an area where wood has been wet and then dried out – under a leaky pipe or a leaky roof. They chew out a space to lay their eggs. They also use hollow doors and beams. If you see more than half a dozen in the house over several days then you probably have an infestation. It is necessary to then find the next to complete the extermination.
